If you can tear yourself away from the swimming pool, there is plenty to do and see locally: the Luberon’s picturesque villages of Gordes, Bonnieux and Roussillon (there are many more), the Rustrel Colorado and a network of nature trails and cycle paths; indeed one of the best ways to explore the countryside is by bike. You’ll also find hot-air ballooning, hang-gliding, horse-riding, tennis, canoeing/kayaking and even an adventure park for children.
the region
West, along the N100, is the market town of L’isle-sur-la-Sorgue (which on Sundays hosts the best antiques markets outside Paris), Avignon (of bridge and papal palace fame) and the vineyards of Chateaux-Neuf-du-Pape (where you can slurp, gargle and sniff your way through the region’s finest wines).
North of the farmhouse is the Mont Ventoux – legendary as one of the most gruelling climbs in the Tour de France bike race. We recommend a drive to the top to catch the sun setting over Provence.
East lie the foothills of the Alps, which serve up fantastic walking territory. The Gorge de Verdon offers white-water rafting and breath-taking views.
To the south is the coast. A visit to the fishing village of Cassis and swimming in the famous “calanques” are not to be missed and we would also urge you to make time for a trip to Marseille to savour “bouillabaisse” by the Old Port.
